The GenHERation® 5 Questions series features our exclusive interviews with the most powerful people in the world to provide you with actionable advice on how to navigate your career path.

Robbie Brenner is the President of Mattel Studios and Chief Content Officer.

What do you know now that you wish you knew at the beginning of your career?

I’ve learned that trusting my instincts is invaluable. I realized that my gut reactions usually lead to the best decisions, especially in a creative field where bold choices matter. The best projects come from passion and embracing that conviction and excitement has always paid off.

Which high school or college class best prepared you for your professional career?

The experience that best prepared me for my professional career was my upbringing in New York City. The city exposes you to all different kinds of people and perspectives, which in turn shaped my worldview. When I moved to LA, I was able to make connections with the many personalities that populate this industry. There are some things about this industry that can’t be taught in school, you need to learn through exposure and experience.

What is the go-to question you ask interview candidates?

I love asking talented candidates about what sets their souls on fire or what types of projects make them excited to get out of bed in the morning. It’s a great icebreaker that shows me what really drives them. Plus, it helps me see if they’re just looking for a clock-in, clock-out job or want to be part of something special. Their answers give me a sense of whether their passions align with our vision at Mattel Films.

What is the biggest risk you have taken?

One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was joining Mattel—it was a totally new direction for me and unlike anything I’d done before. But I’ve always found that the “riskiest” chapters of my career, like Dallas Buyers Club, Barbie, or jumping into Mattel, have ended up being the most rewarding.

What is your genius?

I’d say my strength is knowing how to surround myself with people who push me to think bigger and inspire me creatively. I’m always drawn to people who share a passion for storytelling and a drive to create unforgettable films. By surrounding myself with a team of talented, driven people, we’ve been able to bring unique visions to life and make work that really connects with audiences
