World: Obama Family Welcomes Pope Francis to the U.S.

The Pope has landed in our country! His trip has just begun to kick off the World Meeting of Families. The Pope, who flew from Cuba, landed in Washington, D.C. yesterday afternoon and was greeted by President Obama, first lady Michelle, their daughters, and Vice President Biden and his family. He is the fourth head of the Catholic Church to visit the United States, following Paul VI who traveled to the U.S. 50 years earlier. Francis told reporters, including CNN’s Rosa Flores, that he was happy to make his first U.S. visit. Pope Francis arrived in the United States as a new CNN poll found that nearly half of Americans and 78% of Catholics are excited for his visit. The CEO of Washington Catholic charities, Monsignor John Enzier, said “He is my hero. He lives the Gospel in the way I want to live it myself…he tries to make sure that people all feel they are included. When I have a chance to meet him, and frankly just be with him, I am going to be lifted up myself. I am really psyched.”
