Japan’s Mount Ontake erupted unexpectedly on Saturday and the death toll is presumed to be 31 people dead. Japan is a very seismically active country; in fact it is one of the most seismically active countries in the world. According to Reuters, “Japan lies on the “Ring of Fire,” a horseshoe-shaped band of fault lines and volcanoes circling the edges of the Pacific Ocean, and is home to 110 active volcanoes.” However, there have been no fatalities due to volcanic eruptions since 1991. There were no signs that this volcano was to erupt, and rescue efforts have been underway since the eruption.
