The deputy prime minister of Turkey has made comments that have caught the attention of people around the world. Bülent Arinc recently declared that women should not laugh loudly in public. Arinc made the comment while talking about the “moral decline” of today’s society. “A man should be moral but women should be moral as well, they should know what is decent and what is not decent,” Arinc said. “She should not laugh loudly in front of all the world and should preserve her decency at all times.” Arinc also commented on how Turkish soap operas promote a “lax lifestyle,” and how drugs and prostitution are plaguing the nation. In response to his denouncement of women laughing loudly in public, women around the world have begun a protest using social media. Women have been posting pictures of themselves laughing on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, using the hashtag #direnkahkaha (ignore him – laugh). Female celebrities, such as Emma Watson, have even joined the protest and posted pictures of themselves laughing. Understandably, the sexist tone in Arinc’s comments has caused great outcry and disbelief across the globe.
