World News: Australian Travel Ban

On Tuesday, Australia became the first developed country to close its boarders to citizens of countries hit worst by the Ebola outbreak. Australia has banned visas for people in countries including Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. The isolated states say that this move stigmatizes healthy people and would make the disease harder to treat. Australia’s decision comes after a move by the U.S. military to quarantine soldiers returning from Ebola response missions. According to the United Nations these measures discourage the much needed relief work and make it harder to stop the spread of the virus. The Head of the UN, Anthony Banbury said that, “Anything that will dissuade foreign trained personnel from coming here to West Africa and joining us on the frontline to fight the fight would be very, very unfortunate.”
