Google is attempting to fully understand the human body by developing a project known as Baseline. Currently, most biomarker research focuses on early warning signs, such as proteins. Google Baseline would look at genome irregularities, the body’s metabolism, and other signs in addition to these proteins. In June, Apple announced a partnership with Epic, a company that stores electronic medical records. Google’s latest project seems to be playing “catch-up” with their biggest competitor. In order to sidestep the tightly-regulated healthcare industry, Google Baseline will focus on health data rather than disease data, which is more regulated. According to the multibillion dollar company, measuring healthiness is key for future endeavors in the healthcare and technology industries.
