YouTube’s new chief engineer, Matthew Mengerink, recently got a look at the virtual reality footage that Google has been developing but has not yet released to the public. “I saw stuff that just melted my brain,” said Mengerink. “That’s the future technology of YouTube. Those are the table stakes: How do you change the way people look at things?”
YouTube’s ambitions to work towards including virtual reality on the site fit right in with YouTube’s other expansions. On Wednesday YouTube is launching YouTube Red, a subscription service that provides ad-free access to original shows and movies from top YouTube talent for $10 a month. In late summer, YouTube also released YouTube Gaming, a hub dedicated to video game related content.
