Tech: It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Verizon

How long does it currently take you to upload a photo to the internet? Would you say that might take you around two seconds? Verizon is now working on a new broadband technology that would make it possible to upload 1000 pictures in the same two seconds.

Verizon’s new technology would provide customers with download speeds of 10 gigabits per second, the fastest internet speed ever recorded. That speed is about 10 times as fast as Google fiber and about 1000 times faster as the average household internet speed. At those speeds, you could download a two-hour HD movie in approximately 8 seconds and about 100 students could download a textbook in two seconds simultaneously.

The new technology is said to work by “adding new colors of light” to Verizon’s existing fiber-optic cable networks.

Currently, Verizon is only testing the new technology in the lab, but hopefully in the coming months the new speeds can be incorporated into fiber-optic networks across the country.
