Tech: Google Takes a Test Drive in Texas

Texas will become the second state in America where Google’s self driving cars are tested, following California. Unlike California, Texas does not yet enforce strict rules and regulations regarding autonomous cars, allowing an opportunity for Google to test their product in more diverse driving environments. Google has also gotten the approval from Texas government officials from the Texas Department of transportation, who believed that the technology was “mature and ready to be tested.” Google has been the first company to test their autonomous vehicles on the road, but there are many other companies, such as Tesla and Mercedes, developing this technology. Autonomic are believed to have many benefits such as, preventing the number of accidents, making roads safer, and making people’s lives easier.  As for now, there are few limitations governing the development of the autonomous car, which has been reflected by the lack of regulations. Jennifer Haroon, head of business operations for Google’s self-driving car supports this legal environment, explaining, “We don’t think new laws are necessary at this stage and in fact that could be harmful to innovation.”
