Politics: White House Releases “It’s On Us” PSA

The White House recently released a new PSA to mark the one-year anniversary of the “It’s On Us” campaign, which aims to change the culture around sexual assault on college campuses. The 30-second spot entitled “The One Thing” features celebrities like Josh Hutcherson, Zoe Saldana, and the HAIM sisters emphasizing the importance of consent, ending with the reminder, “Consent: if you don’t get it, you don’t get it.” The message arrives just as students are returning to school, and most importantly, as they enter the “Red Zone”—the period from now until Thanksgiving, when students are most vulnerable to sexual violence. “It’s On Us” was formed after the creation of a task force to address rape on college campuses, and has been led by senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett; the effort has largely focused on empowering students to intervene against sexual assault, and encouraging men in particular to act as allies toward their female classmates. According to a White House press release, more than 300 schools have student-run chapters of the It’s On Us campaign, and more than 650 events have been held since the campaign’s launch last year.

I think that it is really incredible that the White House did this. Especially considering that they used famous actors and singers. I think that by doing so they really opened up the target audience. I think its great that the White House has this issue on their radar and is looking for a way to solve it as consent and rape is a major issue that needs to be addressed.
