Politics: Drone at the White House

Drone?  More like “groan,” which is probably what members of the Secret Service have been doing since a small drone landed on the White House lawn early on Monday morning. The device has since been ruled harmless but it has raised questions about whether or not the Secret Service is prepared to manage new technologies. “On 1/26/15, at approximately 3:08 am, a Secret Service Uniformed Division officer posted on the South Grounds of the White House complex heard and observed a ‘quad copter’ device approximately two feet in diameter, flying at a very low altitude and ultimately crashing on the southeast side of the complex,” said Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary, in statement.  “There was an immediate alert and lockdown of the complex until the device was examined and cleared.” The lockdown lasted until around 5am. Barack and Michelle Obama are currently on a trip to India and it is unclear whether their daughters were in the White House at the time of the incident.  “It’s predictable,” said Rep. John Mica, R-Florida. “You have this capability. You could put light explosives on a drone and they could do an incredible amount of damage not only to the White House but to the Capitol and other government facilities.”
