Famed As: Author of the Harry Potter Series

About: Joanne Rowling was born in England and grew up in Chepstow, Gwent. She attended Exeter University, where she received a French and Classics degree. Post-graduation, Rowling worked as researcher at Amnesty International in London and as an English teacher in Portugal. The first of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone was published in 1997, under the pen name J.K. Rowling since the publisher did not think that a woman’s name would appeal to an audience of young boys. The books have sold over 400 million copies world- wide and have been adapted into a movie series with Warner Bros. Rowling’s work also inspired The New York Times to create a separate Best Sellers list for children’s literature. Presently, Rowling is working on her first screen play, for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, in collaboration with Warner Bros.
