Education: The Benefits of a Liberal Arts Degree

Have you spent time with a teenager lately? Have you spent time with a teenager who wasn’t gripping their phone the entire time lately? The reality is that our world is overrun with technology, but for those students gearing up to choose a college, the liberal arts may be the best remedy for their tech ravaged souls. “The future of a country like the U.S. rests on our ability to master how technology interacts with how humans live, work, and play,” said CNN host Fareed Zakaria. “And that depends on skills fostered by the liberal arts, such as creativity, aesthetic sensibility and social, political and psychological insight.” In his book, In Defense of a Liberal Education, Zakaria posits that the United States was built on liberal arts values and that modern schools tend to overemphasize the importance of STEM learning and de-emphasize the value of a holistic education. Zakaria isn’t the first to make this argument, when unveiling a new edition of the iPad, Steve Jobs said, “It is in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not enough. It’s technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the result that makes our hearts sing.”
