Education: Sweet Briar College is Closing

Sweet Briar College, a small women’s liberal arts college in Virginia, has announced that it will be closing its doors after its spring semester. Sweet Briar was founded in 1901 as a women’s college and is known for its study abroad and equestrian programs. This announcement came as a shock to students and faculty who were unaware of declining enrollment and financial pressure. Despite this, the school has a respectable reputation and a healthy endowment, but since the recession, they have also been unable to give its students a generous financial aid package prompting many prospective students to matriculate at more affordable colleges.  In an interview, Paul G. Rice, Sweet Briar Board Chair, explained, “We have moral and legal obligations to our students and faculties and to our staff and to our alumnae. If you take up this decision too late, you won’t be able to meet those obligations. People will carve up what’s left — it will not be orderly, nor fair.”
