World: Political Scandal in Argentina

Last weekend, a very high-profile Argentine prosecutor, Alberto Nisman, was found dead in his apartment with a gunshot to his head.  There were no witnesses or neighbors and there was no letter, but Argentine officials and Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner had believed it was a suicide. However, yesterday, President Kirchner, who initially called Nisman’s death a suicide, reversed her words and announced that she believes it was murder and that this is the beginning of a major political scandal. Nisman had spent 10 years investigating the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Argentina that killed around 85 people. Last week, Nisman had claimed that Kirchner and the Argentine government had covered up Iran’s involvement in the bombing.  Kirchner denied any involvement with the event, but she believes that the claim made could be linked to Nisman’s death.  In her statement, she mentioned, “The suicide (that I am convinced) was not a suicide.”  She thinks that this could be the beginning of a plot to destroy her administration.

In addition, it has been stated how Nisman had feared for his safety and 10 federal police were assigned to protect him. The officers were recently suspended as part of the investigation.
