Germany’s top politicians approved the delivery of machine guns, hand grenades, and antitank missiles to Kurdish forces fighting Islamic militants in Iraq. This decision signifies Germany’s growing role as a global power. Previously, Germany had shied away from conflict zones and delivered humanitarian aid instead of providing military support. Although Chancellor Angela Merkel has not described a clear policy on intervention, German politicians have taken control over efforts to ease the crisis in Ukraine. However, while Parliament supports sending weapons, 2/3 of the German population oppose the decision.
