World News: Egyptian Evolution

Egypt may finally be cracking down on violence against women. An Egyptian court recently sentenced men to life in prison for sexual assaults of women; while this may be more commonplace in America, the action Egypt is taking is unprecedented. The violence that occurred in this case was against women during Cairo’s Tahrir Square public rallies; seven men were sentenced to life in prison, and two more were sentenced to 20 years in prison. Charges against men who sexually harass women are also being brought to light; the fact that the Egyptian government is paying attention to this important issue is largely due to the media’s coverage of the violence against women that was being left unnoticed by the law.
