To many of us, life without electricity seems like a life lived by generations in the distant past. However, even right now there are people in the world who are off the electrical grid and don’t have access to electricity. In Africa, especially East Africa, this is a huge problem, especially when efforts to get more people on the grid are hindered by exponential population growth. This is where solar energy comes into play. Solar energy is modular and can be harnessed in mass quantities as well as in small amounts suitable to the needs of just a family. Companies such as M-Kopa Solar provide “pay-as-you-go” renewable energy for off-grid households in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, and are creating a profitable business while helping solve a difficult problem.
