Technology: Cloud Concerns

In light of the situation where nude pictures of many celebrities were stolen off of their iClouds and leaked onto the internet by a hacker, Apple chief executive Tim Cook has announced that Apple will start to alert users when data from iCloud is restored to a new device. Apple announced that the hacker correctly guessed the passwords or used phishing (Phishing a person is to trick them into giving up their password) to get to the iCloud accounts, and that Apple’s security was not breached. According to Dr. Steven Murdoch, an information security researcher at University College London, Apple can do much more to protect people’s privacy. He uses the example of banks which “are sending hardware and letters to customers, and sometimes requesting they come into branches, which gives better security but at a cost.”
