Politics: The Importance of Midterm Elections

Congresswoman Maxine Waters urged African Americans to vote in this year’s midterms at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, claiming that “midterm elections are just as important as presidential elections.” In 2008 and 2012 African American votes were represented in record numbers, outnumbering white voters for the first time in history. Many Democrats worry that black turnout will not be as high without Obama up for election, and as a result the legislative interests of the African American community will be ignored. Waters expressed concern for specific issues such as the Voting Rights Act, minimum wage, and healthcare.
