Interestingly, the Pew Research Center found that 72 percent of Americans believe that religion is losing its impact on American life. This was an astounding development since religious arguments and leaders fuel American society, and they have played an important role in the diversity of the country. A declining influence of religion in America can perhaps be correlated to a receding role in American politics. In a study by The New York Times, nearly half of Americans support that houses of worship should express their opinions on social and political issues. About 32 percent said that houses of worship should even endorse candidates, but that is illegal. More key findings in the poll showed that support for gay marriage has dropped to 49 percent compared to the 54 percent who approved in February. Furthermore, only 30 percent of Americans see the Obama administration as friendly toward religious groups.
